Our History
From a personal tragedy to a national road safety movement.
Save the Nation (SNA) is a non-profit, non-religious, non-political, indigenous development organization. Its beginnings trace back to the founder and Executive Director, Mr. Mesganaw Bimrew, who is himself one of the victims of a traffic accident: he lost his beloved father, a pedestrian, who was hit by a public bus while walking on the roadside near the Megenagna Amche ring road. Save the Nation obtained its license and legal entity from the Ethiopian Charities and Societies Agency with certificate number 3403, with the vision of preventing children, students, and communities from imminent traffic injury — thereby reducing property damage and deaths related to road crashes. The organization also provides financial aid and material support to vulnerable children and students from low-income families in its project areas.
2015 — Joining the Global Alliance
In 2015, SNA became an official member of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. The Alliance provides concise information about the activities of NGOs to non-NGO actors with an interest and a stake in road safety: governments, foundations, intergovernmental agencies, the media, and others. The Alliance also acts as a coordinator and mobilizer for activities surrounding the Decade of Action 2011–2020. Our work is fully supported by the Alliance, a valuable long-term partner.
A founding partnership with the U.S. Embassy
At the beginning, SNA received a generous start-up grant from the U.S. Embassy, a partner and supporter of our work since its inception in 2013. The U.S. Embassy and SNA have a long-term partnership and are working together to improve road safety for young people and communities across the country.
