Promoting Sustainable Cities and Communities

In recent decades the world has experienced unprecedented urban growth. By 2050, nearly 7 in 10 people will live in cities. Rapid urbanization brought enormous challenges, including many lack of safety on the roads. Save the Nation promoting for better urban planning and management are needed to make roads and transport is affordable, accessible and sustainable. Urban design itself should favor and promote a model shift away from private motor vehicles towards active forms of transport such as walking and cycling and public transit. If this successfully implemented, a model shift towards these more sustainable forms of mobility would not only lead to improvements in safety, but also impact favorably on congestion, noise and air pollution. Save the Nation will keep striving to address many Sustainable Development Goals beside sustainable Development Goals 3 on health and 11 on making our cities in Ethiopia and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Mitigating Climate Change Through Road Safety

When cities and settlements and their transport systems which serve them are designed and managed with safety and sustainability in mind, there are inevitable benefits for livability, health and the environment. Save the Nation believes when roads are safe, people walk and cycle more. When they do they gain the rewards to health and well-being of increased physical activity and decreased air pollution.

Advocating for Building Effective Leadership for Road Safety

It is widely understood that stronger leadership is needed at all levels of society to achieve road safety targets, including those linked to Sustainable Development Goals. People in positions of authority-from government, academia, civil society like us and private sector-should leverage to make road safety priority, help others understand what works to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries, and put in place policies and programs to save lives.

Save the Nation attended The Eighth Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims in San Salvador, El Salvador

Save the Nation attended The Eighth Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims in San Salvador, El Salvador. The meeting brought together 214 participants from 61 countries, addressing the theme “Rethinking road safety: Mobility for people and planet.” Road crashes cause 1.3 million preventable deaths and around 50 million injuries annually worldwide. UN Member States are committed to reducing road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, and the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 outlines actions to achieve this. Save the Nation calls on governments to prioritize evidence-based actions, transparent investment in safe mobility, and NGO involvement in decision-making processes to achieve the target. The organization commits to advocating for people’s right to safe mobility and a 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030 by empowering communities, using data and evidence, and holding governments accountable.
